It is nestled on a small hill with its towering cypress trees in the shadows of the Pyramid of Cestius (12 B.C.). and a section of the city's ancient Aurelian wall. Also nearby are the historic districts of Trastevere and Testaccio, very interesting sections of old Rome which are full of shops and restaurants (trattorias). Less than half a mile from this apartment is the Centrale Montemartini museum. It was originally a 1920's power generating plant which has been transformed into a fascinating museum displaying both the original generating equipment and a permanent exhibit of about 400 ancient Roman sculptures. The historic center of Rome with its many sites such as Pza. Navona, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain is also within walking distance from Trastevere. Buses and trams are also available to reach the historic center from Trastevere. Of special interest in this area is the famous Porta Portese market, a sprawling open-air flea market open only on Sunday mornings which attracts a crowd of hundreds. A true Roman adventure.
